SNOW REMOVAL

SNOW REMOVAL WITH SALT

The need for winter maintenance is obvious, both in economic terms and in terms of road safety: the elimination of snow and ice, in addition to significantly reducing accidents involving people and damage to property, leads to lower fuel consumption by motor vehicles, thus saving energy, and above all enables economic activity to be maintained, in particular the transport of goods by road.

The market for de-icing salt is highly specific, due to its unpredictability (requirements are forecast within a week) and extreme variability. Instantaneous requirements can be very high (on the order of 100,000 t/day for the whole of France) and therefore require a great deal of anticipation in terms of product availability, for both salt producers and users.

In France, salt for winter maintenance is mainly produced by :

  • - At the Groupe Salins mine in Varangéville, near Nancy, ideally located in the northeast quarter of France.
  • - At the Salin-de-Giraud salt works in the Camargue region, the Rhone River is used to transport this sea salt to the regions of use in an environmentally-friendly way, using high-capacity barges.

ROCK, a subsidiary of the Salins Group based in Mulhouse, is responsible for the “advanced” storage (close to the place of use) and sale of these de-icing salts.
