FIRST TERRITORY TO WELCOME FLAMINGOS

The Salin d'Aigues Mortes has become the 1st host territory for pink flamingos since 2016 thanks to the work of our sauniers, and can accommodate over 15,000 of them. Hundreds of chicks are born here every year.
If there are so many flamingo chicks in Aigues-Mortes, it's because the industrial production of La Baleine salt is done with great respect for nature. Groupe Salins' commitment is to continue to encourage the flamingos, as well as other protected species (avocets, spoonbills, etc.), to live and reproduce on the salt marsh. Another factor is the in-depth work carried out over the years by the salt marsh's staff in terms of landscaping :
- Creation of artificial islands
- Salt activity favorable to these species
- Water movement management by our salt producers
- All staff play the game in terms of traffic flow and the way they work on the site
- The sauniers modify their work itineraries
- Speed reduction
- No visits to these areas: it has become a bird sanctuary
The Aigues-Mortes salt marsh is a major breeding site for colonial shorebirds in the French Mediterranean. Eight species of colonial laro-limicolae are also found here, breeding on the coasts of the French Mediterranean: the Scaup Gull, the Laughing Gull, the Black-headed Gull, the Hansel Tern, the Common Tern, the Little Tern, the Caugek Tern and the Elegant Avocet.
On the Camargue scale, the Aigues-Mortes salt marshes represent a very important site for two species, accounting for 51% of the total number of pairs for the Avocet and 20% for the Little Tern.
