Salt for winter maintenance

Ensuring the winter maintenance of the road network saves a large number of lives every year and enables economic activity to continue.
The use of road salt is the most effective method, from a technical, economic and environmental perspective.

The effects of sodium chloride are well understood and remain limited when best practice is followed.

Best practice guidelines

Salt must be stored in sheds. Where this is not possible, stocks must be protected with tarpaulins.

As for spreading, this must be carried out judiciously, using the correct dose. In practice, the amount of salt applied ranges from 10 to 30 g/m² of road surface during a single spreading operation. Under these conditions, the salt is highly diluted and its concentration quickly returns to natural levels.

Innovative techniques

The key to reducing salt’s environmental impact remains optimising its use, particularly through training the staff responsible for applying it.

The technique known as ‘salt slurry’, which involves the simultaneous spreading of granulated salt and brine, improves efficiency whilst reducing the quantities used.

First introduced by the Compagnie des Salins du Midi in the 1970s, this method is now becoming widespread in France.

Furthermore, advances in spreading equipment, offering greater consistency and lower application rates, are also contributing to this optimisation.
