Smart Salting

The use of salt for the winter serviceability of roads is nothing new: salt was already being used in the streets of Paris during the 1900s. However, what is new is the sensible use of salt based on a fine observation of the weather conditions in order to time intervention just before phenomena such as hoarfrost, black ice or snow can form. The current spreading equipment varies the spread extremely precisely and only the amount of salt which is absolutely necessary is used on the road. Furthermore, the widespread use of the salt slurry technique (simultaneously spraying a mixture of salt and brine) now protects the road very quickly and optimises the amount of salt used. Last but not least, because of the extreme variability and sudden nature of the winter phenomena, the procurement of de-icing salt is a key factor in the success of winter serviceability. The economic logic of just-in-time deliveries does not apply: it is essential to have a safety stock at the place of use. For more information on smart salting go to : www.rock.fr
